City College makes College Council Elections Paper Free!!

The Stella Maris College in Chennai City has a new first. It has made the College Council election fully automated and  paper free.

"We wanted to reduce the wastage of paper and the unnecessary energy associated with the polling and counting of votes", said the Principal, Prof Sr Jesinthan Quadras in a conversation. "So,we requested the computer science department to develop a software through which the entire process can be computerized".

She says that though this could have been thought before, now, it has become more possible as there is adequate infrastructure as computers available within the college. Result: Each department spent 15 minutes to finish the polling with the department heads facilitating the verification, the poll results were known instantly after the last poll was cast and the entire election process became a smooth operation with no paper work, no over worked faculty and no unnecessary litter in the campus.

"To ensure there wasn't wastage of paper, we also restricted the campaign to hand made paper charts and didn't permit any printed material for campaigning by them", adds Sr. Jesintha. She and her team have several firsts in green initiatives to their credit, including, solid waste management, garden waste composting, tree planting, green campaigns, etc.

Here is wishing the College many more successful 'green steps', true to the spirit of the Patron Saint of the order that manages the College, St Francis of Assisi.
